My Most Embarrassing Sales Call

In my first year of sales I was on a call. It was going well.  The prospect and I were bonding. Like most young and eager sales guys, I was trying to bond through personal engagement. I remember the vibe was good. My prospect was responding to my engaging nature. Things were cruising.

We were getting close to the end of the sales call and I realized she was not the sole decision maker. She was going to have to get buy in from a few others. Knowing that she was going to have to sell it for me, I wanted to build the personal rapport as high as possible so she would sell it for me as much as the solution. You know the drill. Get people talking about themselves and what they love to do. My prospect was about 7 months pregnant.  I knew this was an exciting time for her.  Get her talking about being a new mom would be just what I need to win her over. Excitedly, I asked when she was due.  She paused, looked at me and said, “I’m not pregnant.”

I’ll never forget that call.
