The Proof Is In The Story

NO is the Biggest Little Word in Business!

How do you know if someone is a person of integrity?  If you asked someone- let’s call this fictional character “Joe”, if he was a person of integrity, would he tell you yes?  Probably.  “Prove to me you’re a person of integrity, Joe.”  Joe would probably go on telling you what he thinks integrity means, and then go on telling you how much he values it, why it means so much to him, blah blah blah…. But you’re not convinced.  Nobody wants to be perceived as a person without integrity.  You push for more.  With the right questions, Joe starts telling you stories of when he actually showed integrity in real situations.  The passion and inflection in his voice is undeniable.  What do you think proves more powerfully that Joe is a person of integrity?  Joe’s “understanding” of integrity or Joe’s personal “stories” of integrity?  The proof is in the pudding.  And the pudding in this story is STORY! Recruiting is about finding the “A” Player that can do the job the best, and the best recruiters don’t just look on paper; meaning the resume is not where you’re going to find the story.  The story is in the person.  Good recruiters are people strategists.  And people aren’t just a collection of places they’ve worked and skills and achievements they’ve accumulated.  People are complex; people aren’t going to fit in a neat row of check-boxes.  People will however shine with conviction and passion as to how they are the perfect fit for the job if they are their story.  The story proves they are the best candidate for the job.  People can tell you they are this or that ’til they’re blue in the face, but their story is the proof they are what they’re selling themselves to be. Good recruiters find the story and sell the story.  Candidates: be the story.  Sell yourself. Here are a few of A Sales Guy Recruiting’s stories.  What do they tell you about us?

 After working with one of our clients for a few months they shared some results with us. They were working with 2 recruiting firms, us and another company. We submitted 15 resumes and they hired 7 of our people; the other firm submitted 54 resumes, they hired 1 and then fired him within 30 days.
